David Chang Design Associates
Shimao Loong Palace Villa
Beijing, China
All project descriptions are provided by SBID Awards entrants.
This project adopts innovative aesthetic design and marries the charm and keynote of Chinese style with European decorative techniques in a seamless, natural way. Examples include the caisson (spider web) ceiling, typical of ancient Chinese architecture; the wave pattern woven into traditional Chinese suits; and the cloud pattern that symbolises favorable weather conditions and auspiciousness in traditional Chinese culture. These are combined with an abundance of geometric patterns inspired by nature, such as the shape of beehive and the delicate beautifully overlapping patterns found in the Western Art Nouveau style. By freely borrowing from, reflecting upon and interspersing these Chinese and Western decorative techniques, the space has a strong sense of energy as well as profound cultural significance.
