Launched in 2017, the Master of Design award is bestowed on a practitioner who has contributed greatly to the interior design industry.
China is the fastest growing country in the world for innovation, technology and business. To commence the annual initiative, SBID presented the Master of Design 2017 to five influential figures who support, champion and develop the interior design profession in China. Collectively they have significantly influenced the growth of the Chinese design industry and are dedicated to enhancing and advancing the design community at large.
Liang Jianguo – Founder of Beijing Newsdays Architectural Design
Liang Jianguo is one of the most prolific interior designers in mainland China. Although recognised internationally, Liang has directed his talent, vision, and energy to the Chinese market. After completing his degrees in Artistic and Architectural design, he co-founded Newsdays Design in the 1980’s which began his professional career. As China approached the world stage, Liang recognised the need for a professional group and in 2006 co-founded the Art Display & Decoration Committee of China (ADCC), one of the most active design organisations in China.
Kinney Chan – Founder of Kinney Chan & Associates
Kinney Chan obtained his BA in Interior Design from De Montford University, UK. In 1996, prior to returning to Hong Kong, Kinney founded Kinney Chan Associates (KCA) in Manchester where he practised for two years. As the former chairman of the Hong Kong Interior Design Association and the former director of the Hong Kong Design Centre, he strives to increase public awareness of interior design, as well as developing the creative industries in Hong Kong.
Ju Bin – Founder & Chief Executive Design Director of Horizontal Design
Ju Bin established Horizontal Design in 2003 to provide innovative design solutions in the field of interiors, architecture, landscape and product design. He is also a director of C Foundation, a charitable foundation launched in 2014 to support design education and professional development in China. Keen to help advance the design industry, he lectures at the Central China Academy of Fine Arts, and Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University.
Kot Ge – Founder & Art Director at LSDCASA & Zaizao
Kot Ge built his design foundation as CCO of a well-known 4A advertising agency. After cultivating a multi-faceted skillset in advertising, Kot pursued his dream – founding LSDCASA in 2007 and transforming the firm into one of the most successful design studios in Mainland China. Not only at the forefront of progressive Chinese design, setting industry trends throughout the interior design community, in 2015 he launched his own furnishings brand, Zaizao.
Qu Guangci – Founder and Artistic Director at X+Q
Famous contemporary Chinese sculptor, Qu Guangci was born in Shanghai. He received his MFA from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts Sculpture Department and was the youngest artist to win the grand prize at the National Fine Arts Exhibition. Since 1999, Qu has exhibited his works around the world and became renowned throughout the art world for his sculpting techniques. In 2007 he founded X+Q Sculpture Studio and followed by the brand X+Q Art in 2010.
