Cronin Kitchens
Papahia Kitchen
Auckland, New Zealand
All project descriptions are provided by SBID Awards entrants.
This kitchen forms part of a transformative renovation of a large family home, jointly owned by a surgeon and an architect. The architect’s vision was for a curved kitchen island, and so the designer took this as a starting point for the design.
Given its shape, Corian was the clear choice of material to use for the construction of this complex island. Where possible, white appliances were specified and the remainder were integrated to create a seamless look. The cabinetry is both angular and curved to mimic the shape of the island.
The inspiration for the timber highlights came from the owner’s choice of bar stools. The colour and grain of the light oak adds a warmth and natural texture to an otherwise stark landscape. The timber is expressed as oak-look tiles in the island seating recess and on the splashback, as well as the open shelving in the scullery.
