Kitchen Architecture
Fabrics of Nature
Auckland, New Zealand
All project descriptions are provided by SBID Awards entrants.
With the timelessness of restrained materiality, this elegantly tailored kitchen draws inspiration from a mid-century aesthetic featuring textural battens with natural quartzite; crafting a place where the very fabric of connected family living in all its beauty is experienced.
Creating the dramatic elongated window was a key form. The bench and three surrounding panels extend into its jambs; detailed to seamlessly frame the garden beyond. Long oak cupboards above and white drawers below echo the same horizontal rhythm, emphasised with three levels of hidden lighting.
Weaving materiality with crafted form, oak veneer dresses tall walls with battens expressed in an L-shaped motif. This motif is echoed in veneer treatments of both tall walls and subtly evident in the island plan. The island continues the battened pleat-like story balanced in white allowing the quartzite tops to shine. A delicate curve under uses radial modulation to carve out a welcoming gathering place.
