Re-boot, re-cycle, replenish and refurbish was part of the design brief when Rachel McLane took on Scarborough’s new-old hotel for Bike & Boot Inns. The brief was to create a “modern leisure” concept with “funky interiors”; the Scarborough hotel being their flagship.
Rachel McLane were fortunate with the Bike & Boot in that the building, once a row of Georgian terrace houses before becoming a hotel, retained much of the original architecture. Even now, the envelope of the building remains true to its heritage.
It made no commercial sense to strip back and replaster the walls. Rather than hiding the faded grandeur of the original building, Rachel McLane worked with it, giving it a new lease of life through individual fixtures, fittings, colour and design. In doing so, the practice worked closely with the clients and their Brand Agency to create what is now recognisable as the Bike and Boot signature style.
