Emergency Department Expansion at Lankenau Medical Center
Pennsylvania, United States
All project descriptions are provided by SBID Awards entrants.
With a community growing quickly in size and diversity, and development in the surrounding neighbourhood, the Emergency Department at Lankenau needed to double in size and treatment spaces. The design team implemented an efficient and inspired pod concept: pods allow for a clear separation between higher and lower-acuity patients. This concept allows for patients to be seen by the appropriate staff as soon as possible, and results in a substantially shorter stay. With a community diverse in culture, language, and age, the interior planning strategy is reinforced using colour, imagery, and text that allows any visitor to navigate easily between the zones and corridors with ease. The new Emergency Department serves a diverse community and was carefully designed with them in mind. The ED was also designed for future expansion, to more readily serve this wondrous and rapidly growing community.
