AEW Capital Management asked Elkus Manfredi Architects to design a culturally transformative workplace for its office in Boston’s Seaport District. AEW sought to offer a rich mix of options for employees to encourage collaboration while allowing people to work in an environment suited to their individual working styles. To bring people together, encourage mentorship, and build community, designers first turned the workplace inside out, moving private offices to the interior and positioning workstations, collaboration areas, and the employee café nearest the windows. A wide variety of workspaces are enhanced by abundant daylight and a curated collection of original art that speaks to AEW’s core values of inclusion, diversity, and community. Throughout the office, an ongoing dialogue between upscale and industrial elements creates an environment that is sophisticated and slightly edgy while still being comfortable and unpretentious, capturing the firm’s leadership position as well as its welcoming culture.
