University Medical Center (UMC) New Orleans forms the cornerstone of a new healthcare district, 10 years after the region’s devastation by Hurricane Katrina. Integrated planning, architecture, interiors, landscape, lighting and environmental graphics design created a facility that supports a holistic approach to healthcare. Programming includes 426 all-private patient beds, an emergency department, Behavioral Health, a comprehensive cancer care program and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in southeast Louisiana. UMC’s architecture expresses elegant linear forms that achieve proportion to scale, while resiliency strategies ensure it can withstand and continue delivering treatment amidst natural disaster. Inside, custom graphics and interior design foster a warm setting that distinctly reflects New Orleans. Though it offers critical services for uninsured patients, UMC’s plush surfaces belie those of a typical hospital. Throughout the facility, meditation rooms and five courtyards adorned with lush vegetation, artwork and reflecting pools promote healing and heighten wellbeing.
